Professor, Medical School

Edge Hill University – Medical School

We’re here to create and harness knowledge, to deliver opportunity for everyone.

 About the Role

The Faculty is seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the position of Professor, Medical School.

The Faculty of Health, Social Care and Medicine (FHSCM) is a major provider of health, social care and medical education. It is a dynamic and responsive Faculty which has strong relationships with local health and social care providers and a wide portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes which includes those leading to dual professional registrations, those which support new roles, and those which recruit international students.

The Medical School was established in 2019 and will have its first cohort of MBChB students starting their fifth and final year in September 2024.  The postgraduate department in The Medical School has an established education programme of over 20 years that focuses on clinical education, research and leadership.   It also hosts the North West Imaging Academy. Academic staff in The Medical School undertake research within the supportive infrastructure of the Health Research Institute.  Research activity relates to the work of its 3 research centres - Cardiorespiratory Research Centre, the Centre for Arts and Wellbeing and the Edge Hill Primary and Integrated Care Centre -  as well as the Clinical Education Research Group (CERG).  The CERG is aligned to the scope of the NIHR Incubator for Clinical Education Research and has streams of work related to applied research and evaluation as well as research in education innovation (simulation) and scholarship.

 About You

The post-holder will be a research leader for The Medical School and the Faculty. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from those with expertise in medical/clinical education but we will consider applications from those whose research aligns to that of the Faculty including our growing work in community health and long term conditions.

Developing research capacity and capability in The Medical School and the broader Faculty will be a key part of the role. Target setting, leadership, line management and/or close working with academic managers will also be important. The post holder will be expected to play a major role in development of external research partnership and collaborations including those in local NHS Trusts.

The post holder will work closely with other research leaders and contribute to general research activities and research governance and management within the Faculty and, where appropriate, the wider University. You will make a major contribution towards the next REF (UoA 3). A contribution to teaching , innovation and enterprise and broader leadership within the Medical School and Faculty is also expected.

Professors at Edge Hill University are expected to have very strong national and international research profiles, a successful track record in research-related income generation, of successful PhD supervision, and of supporting the development of a vibrant research environment. Professors play a central role in shaping and helping to deliver on the University’s research and knowledge exchange strategies.

In addition, Professors are expected to provide research mentoring to early career researchers, and to have a full role in the development of the research mentoring process within the Faculty and the wider University. They will have responsibility for generating research and tender income, and for advising and mentoring colleagues making applications for external funding.
