Full time starting salary is normally in the range £34,980 to £44,263 with potential progression once in post to £46,974

Full Time, Fixed Term contract up to January 2026

The School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham is a vibrant and thriving academic community with over 150 academic, research and Professional Services staff. We have expanded significantly over the past 5 years and are moving to a new state-of-the-art molecular sciences research building in 2024. The Technical Manager is the lead technical Professional Services member of staff within the School. You will provide direction and professional support within assigned areas of responsibility to effectively manage the technical activities within the school. This will include the management and deployment of an effective team of technical and specialist staff to support the strategic academic aims of the school’s research and teaching, working closely with the Head of Operations and the Head of School, and in liaison with Section Leads, heads of research groups and other academic staff and researchers.

You will provide oversight, advice and guidance on managing and monitoring all issues relating to health and safety within an academic school containing a wide range of risks and hazards, ensuring compliance with legislation and school, college and university policies.

As the senior member of the School Technical Team, your contribution will be important and valued by your colleagues and the staff and students we support. You will be part of a collegiate school community with a supportive working environment formed by the school’s Professional Services teams and academic staff. You will be expected to demonstrate citizenship and develop and maintain generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships, ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.

You should have:

  • A degree (or equivalent qualifications) in a Chemistry related subject and/or an equivalent professional/technical qualification and/or have significant relevant experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of health and safety regulations, preferably with a relevant health and safety qualification.
  • Excellent people management skills with a successful track record of leading, managing, adapting and motivating teams to meet current and future needs.
  • Experience of managing technical facilities, staff and operations in a complex environment.
  • Broad ranging relevant technical expertise, including up to date in-depth knowledge of the school’s specialist areas.
