This is an exciting time to join the Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service at Imperial College! We have been investing heavily in our Service to better support our students through university life. Duties and responsibilities

We are searching for a new colleague to join our team of Mental Health Advisers. At Imperial our Mental Health Advisers provide specialist support to students with moderate to severe mental health difficulties. They help students to develop strategies to enable them to continue to engage with their studies and put in place plans to assist with care and support where needed. They act as a liaison between NHS mental health services and university support services. They work to ensure safeguarding concerns are escalated within the Service and follow risk management protocols to protect the safety of our students. A typical day as a Mental Health Adviser will look like:

  • Carrying out assessments with students
  • Supporting an ongoing caseload of students through delivery of regular appointments
  • Multi-disciplinary team meetings and correspondence
  • Engaging with staff across the university in supporting students in their caseload

Our Mental Health Advisers also use their skills to advise academic and professional services staff who are supporting students with mental health difficulties. They also help with the design and delivery of mental health awareness training for staff as well life skills training for students.

Essential requirements

Key requirements

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant field
  • Relevant professional qualification in mental health (e.g. Nursing with RMN or CPN specialities, Mental Health Social Worker, Clinical/Counselling Psychologist)
  • Current accreditation by, or registration with, a relevant and appropriate professional body
  • Well-developed expertise in the assessment of mental health needs and the management of risk, and knowledge of the range of mental health services available
  • Experience of managing a varied caseload – organising and prioritising activities and keeping good quality records
  • Well-developed teamwork skills demonstrated through previous experience working in multi-disciplinary teams

Further information

This post is primarily campus based with the potential for one to two days per week working from home. Working from home days will be set by the Service in line with operational needs.

Due to the nature of the role the majority of annual leave will need to be taken outside of term-time.
