Applications to: Dr Julie Ewald via the 'Apply' button above.

We seek an ecologist with analytic skills, most importantly GIS (Geographical Information Science) skills but also including data management, and experience undertaking statistical analysis on ecological data. This role will allow the holder to develop further skills in these areas through involvement in both ongoing research projects and new research projects. Current research projects that the analyst would be involved with include several long-term GWCT databases and spatially enabled datasets (the Sussex Study and the National Gamebag Census for example). This role also involves the day-to-day supervision of undergraduate GIS placement students and the provision of GIS support to other researchers with the GWCT.

We welcome applications from ecologists trained to a least the graduate level, with a good first degree, who have a passion for the natural environment and wish to use their analytical skills to further practical conservation. The successful candidate will be a team player, who will join a small, friendly group of researchers – including data scientists, and researchers managing the day-to-day administration of long-term databases. The analyst’s skills and attention to detail will be an integral part in taking forward plans for the strategic use of the data generated by the GIS/Biometrics team and other researchers across the GWCT.

Specific skills, experience and knowledge

  • Experience in using ArcGIS and R.
  • Excellent IT skills, including MS Office. Extensive knowledge of MS Excel, MS Word, MS Teams.
  • Experience in data entry and data management. Some experience in the use of relational databases – for example SQL would be useful.
  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • A team player; approachable, flexible, enthusiastic and welcoming to those needing assistance in the use and application of GIS and statistics to explore conservation problems.
  • Experience in writing scientific reports.
