We are seeking a full-time postdoctoral Research Associate to work on an ESRC funded project called: Nothing About Us Without Us: Co-producing inclusive data collections infrastructure with learning-disabled people. The successful candidate will have excellent knowledge and experience of ethnographic research along with a clear commitment to amplifying the voices of learning-disabled young people in research, including those who are non-verbal or minimally verbal. The role is based in the Department of Education at the University of York.
The successful candidate will join a team led by Professor Kathryn Asbury and Dr Laura Fox and will be a member of the GOALS Lab. They will be involved in designing an ethnographic study of young people’s communication preferences in a special school sixth form and a residential college. They will also play a central role in data collection, data analysis and writing up findings.
The aim of the project is to understand the many ways in which learning-disabled young people choose to communicate, and to use that understanding to develop and build a library of evidence-informed data collection tools that are well suited to research with learning disabled communities. This library, and a set of inclusion principles, will be co-produced with learning disabled young people as well as key stakeholders such as parents, teachers and allied health professionals e.g. speech and language therapists. A good understanding of, and commitment to, principles and practices of both co-production and open research will be essential.
