The role

You will join a dynamic and rapidly evolving team responsible for advising research academics and professional services teams across the University, to ensure collaborative activity is carried out with the highest degree of compliance with relevant legislation.

You will be involved in developing relationships with academic colleagues and will have a key role in providing advice and training to research academics and those professional services staff that support them on a wide range of legal compliance measures including (but not limited to) the following areas:

Your role will have specific responsibilities for developing and managing the University’s compliance with the NPSA/NCSC Trusted Research Evaluation Framework. Part of this will include implementing the internal Assessment of Third Party Suitability Process, designed to align how due diligence of legal, reputational, financial and national security risks are assessed throughout the institution.

Through project review and internal audit functions, you will also be involved in the assessment of academic compliance with legal aspects including (but not limited to):

  • Export Control Regulations
  • National Security & Investment Act

You will also assist in management and training of new team members, engage with internal and external stakeholders in a fast-paced and developing area of law, and fulfil a critical function in providing specialist advice on measures created to protect UK national security and infrastructure.

What will you be doing?

You will:

  • Assist in establishing new policy, processes and guidance around the University's response to regulatory compliance measures
  • Engage with professional services teams and academics to provide advice and awareness around compliance requirements and associated risks of failure to comply
  • Provide input into wider internal and external communications around prevalent research security risks; in particular, due diligence process and Trusted Research principles
  • Horizon-scanning for arising risks and changes to legislation that have capacity to impact the University across all Faculties and functions

You should apply if

  • You have legal experience working in a regulatory or commercial environment.
  • You are keen to understand new legislation, assess risk, and provide confident and assertive advice to senior personnel with legal and non-legal experience
  • You have a robust understanding of policy and guidance processes, understanding the importance of audit functions.
  • You have strong problem-solving capability, able to deal with a concurrent workload of different issues with shifting priorities.
  • You have experience of providing supervision to junior staff members, and can mentor them through legal work experience and education.
  • You have positive interpersonal skills to enable engagement with key stakeholders within and outside the University, Government regulators, and higher education colleagues.
  • You are solutions-focussed, with a proactive and innovative approach to dealing with the challenges of working in a large, research-intensive University.
