The McGovern lab is seeking a talented and motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate in Immunology. Our research aims to understand how mononuclear phagocytes function within human tissues in health and disease.

The McGovern Lab:

Our team focuses on characterising human mononuclear phagocytes, this includes dendritic cells monocytes and macrophages. These cells perform vital roles in tissue development and function, fight infection and resolve inflammation. To develop our understanding of these cells, we utilise a range of technologies including proteomic, transcriptomic and epigenetic approaches. Recent approaches include work with organoid systems and spatial transcriptomics.

About the role:

You project will aim to understand how cells communicate at the maternal-fetal interface and act to defend us from infection. You will do this by utilising organoid systems, primary tissue macrophage culture systems and human transcriptomic data sets generated within the McGovern lab.

Main duties:

• Generate and maintain organoid and macrophage culture systems
• Design, implementation and application of infection assays
• Statistical analysis and data visualization
• To identify, develop and apply a broad range of techniques to pursue the research objectives
• To present scientific work at seminars within the laboratory and at external meetings
• To contribute to laboratory-wide discussions on developments within the field
• To draft scientific papers, and contribute to the overall preparation of research for publication
• To contribute to public engagement events
• To assist in the training of PhD students and other members of the team

Key responsibilities:

Within the overall direction of the programme, the group, the remit of the project and in discussion with the Group Leader, you will make a significant input into determining the direction of the project within a three-year lifespan.

To plan your own work and objectives on a 12-month basis and manage your experimental work within the project along with your Supervisor.

To identify, develop, modify and apply the necessary techniques to achieve the goals of the project.

To introduce and apply new techniques across a wide range of disciplines and to have the creativity and initiative to develop novel approaches and methods where required.

To ensure the research is carried out in accordance with good practice and in compliance with local policies and legal requirements.

To contribute to the smooth running of the group, including the effective use of resources, training of others and taking responsibility for use of communal facilities.

To enhance your research and generic skills through a tailored development programme.

Essential:

• PhD in immunology or cellular biology, or in the final stages of PhD submission
• Experience with RNA sequencing data sets
• Proven track record of research (e.g: publication record)
• Strong written and oral communication skills

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
