We have an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral researcher in physical oceanography to join our Ocean Science research group at the University of Liverpool. Professor Sharples’s research https://pcwww.liv.ac.uk/~jons/index.htm uses at-sea observations to investigate how ocean physics affects plankton productivity and plankton ecosystem structure, particularly focusing on turbulent mixing and the availability of light and nutrients.
This post is linked to two research projects. CarTRidge (Enhanced carbon export driven by internal tides over the mid-Atlantic ridge) will address the role of internal tidal waves over the mid-Atlantic ridge in supplying nutrients to, and modulating light at, the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) and the impacts that this has on the export of carbon out of the DCM. The eSWEETS project (Enabling sustainable wind energy expansion in seasonally stratified seas) will investigate the possibility of enhanced thermocline mixing caused by tidal currents flowing passed floating offshore wind turbines, and the effects that the mixing has on biogeochemistry (nutrient fluxes, primary production, dissolved oxygen).
The post involves two major research cruises. The cruise for CarTRidge will take place over 7 weeks in the South Atlantic, between mid-February and end March 2025. The cruise for eSWEETS will be for 3 weeks in the North Sea in summer 2025. You will be responsible for processing, calibrating and quality control of CTD (Seabird 911 CTD, LADCPs), mooring (temperature loggers and ADCPs) and glider data, and all underway data from the vessel systems (surface data, navigational and meteorological data, vessel ADCPs). You will be responsible for lodging calibrated, quality-controlled data with the British Oceanographic Data Centre. Following the cruises you will be able to take the lead on writing publications. Both projects are led by Prof Jonathan Sharples at the University of Liverpool but include substantial collaborations with other institutes: you will be joining a large research grouping.
This position is available on a fixed term basis until April 2027.
If you are still awaiting your PhD to be awarded you will be appointed at Grade 6, spine point 30. Upon written confirmation that you have been awarded your PhD, your salary will be increased to Grade 7, spine point 31.
