As a key member of our diverse and inclusive technical team of The University of Southampton, School of Physics and Astronomy, you will be working at the forefront of fundamental Physics research and teaching at one of the UK’s top Russell Group Universities.
Within the workshop team, your main responsibilities will be for the supervision of academics, postdoctoral students and technical staff during their visits to the Student Mechanical Workshop. You will be expected to create, deliver and develop practical engineering training courses for student workshop users in design and engineering principles through to practical training in the use of lathes, mills and other workshop machines for manufacture.
Working closely with the team; other duties will include the design and manufacture of high quality bespoke experimental equipment for use within our research and teaching laboratories and wider University community. This complex work being completed using CAD design software, manufacture through CNC machining and/or conventional manual machines through to final assembly, testing and commissioning.
Successful candidates will have knowledge and experience of the following.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate a high level of skill in practical mechanical engineering and experienced at delivering practical engineering training courses. Although applications are encouraged from those qualified to level 6 on the National Framework for Engineering, we really do want to hear from those that who have equivalent experience or other applicable recognised qualifications. On appointment an agreed individual Continual Professional Development plan will be structured to ensure success in the role and as part of a team.
