We are seeking to appoint an outstanding and highly motivated individual to the role of Professor in the discipline of Electrical & Electronics Engineering.

About this Role

The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics is one of the largest schools in the University of the South Pacific and is committed to pursue excellence in teaching and research. The school offers a number of Undergraduate programmes in Computing Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics; 2 Professional programmes in ICT (Bachelor of Networks & Security and Bachelor of Software Engineering) accredited by the Australian Computer Society; and 2 accredited Engineering programmes (Electrical & Electronic and Mechanical). The school also offers Postgraduate programmes in Information Technology (namely, Computing Science and Information Systems), Cybersecurity, Mathematics and Physics.

The school is now searching for a Professor in Electrical & Electronics Engineering. The incumbent will take a leadership role in further strengthening of the core offerings in the school including the maintenance of accreditations of the EE programmes. The incumbent will also lead the design and development of the curriculum, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses both on campus and through the flexible modes of delivery, conduct and lead research in relevant areas and contribute to the University’s research directions.

Teaching related appointments with an expectation for scholarly accomplishment or whose principal responsibilities are related to scholarly research. Provides leadership to junior faculty, research associates, and graduate students; leadership and development of programs and activities; participation in School (STEMP) and University (USP) service activities; pursuit of professional development programs; liaison with local industry.

Teaching Duties: Teaching activities include classroom instruction, directing projects, assisting with student research and internships. Classroom instruction may be undergraduate and/or post-graduate lecture/seminar courses in the field of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Specifically, the appointee should be capable of coordinating and delivering the following subjects: Power Electronics for Distributed Generation, Digital Signal Processing, and Professional Engineering. All faculty are expected to mentor and advise students on their development, including choices relating to academic program, research projects, and career directions. Participate in the development/design and revision of curriculum offered and lead program accreditation with Engineers New Zealand.

Research related appointment with an expectation for developing and conducting research and securing outside grant and contract funds for scholarly research activity.

Research/Scholarly Work: Pursue scholarly research and publication, and/or professional practice in the areas of Sensorless Control of Linear Induction Machine, Induction Machine Fault Detection and Classification, and Feedback Linearization Control of a Linear Induction Motor. The appointee is expected to maintain a program of research/scholarly work characterized by distinction as evidenced by national and international recognition, significant contributions to the field. Results of research/scholarly work should be published, disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, and/or presented at conferences or symposiums.

Appointment with an expectation for developing and preparing students at the professional doctoral level, master’s level, and baccalaureate level as practicing and educators, with significant responsibility toward both. The position is engaged almost entirely in Electrical and Electronic Engineering practice and teaching, though scholarship and university service is expected; most scholarship activities are expected to contribute to professional issues or program development.

Extension service appointments whose assignments carry an expectation for scholarly accomplishment.

Service: Participate actively as a member of the university community on administrative committees, search committees, in university governance activities, and student advising.

The Appointee shall mainly be responsible for the following;

  • Provide academic leadership and foster excellence in research, teaching and scholarly activities in the discipline;
  • Assume the role of substantive Head of School/Discipline and participate in School and University services;
  • Develop and administer programmes in the discipline;
  • Undertake course planning, development, coordination and delivery (including online and face to face teaching);
  • Academic counselling and consultation with students;
  • Supervise research students to the successful completion of postgraduate programmes; and
  • Conduct and publish individual and/or collaborative research.

 The Person We Seek

To be considered for Professor position, applicants must have;

  • A PhD degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering Or cognate discipline, and be a leading, international authority in this area.
  • Extensive teaching experience;
  • Made a sustained and excellent contribution at international level to academic research and leadership within the relevant discipline;
  • Demonstrated sustained distinction in your interdisciplinary contributions;
  • Championed academic standards and freedom;
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills, and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff;
  • Demonstrated sustained leadership in tertiary teaching, including research-informed teaching, curriculum development and the enhancement of teaching quality, and demonstrated commitment to promoting and advancing the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity.
  • An outstanding track record in research, with outcomes of high quality and impact (including peer-reviewed publications, e.g. journal articles, book chapters, monographs), evidence of attracting external funding and/or of principal investigation in international research projects, and proven experience in successfully recruiting and supervising research students to completion.

Professor should:

  • Demonstrate excellence in teaching in a multicultural environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experienced with distance and flexible learning.

The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Salary Range: FJ $153,416 to FJ $165,855 per annum.
