We are seeking to appoint an outstanding and highly motivated individual to the role of Professor in the discipline of Chemistry.

About the Role

The School of Agriculture, Geography, Environment, Ocean, and Natural Sciences (SAGEONS) seeks to appoint a Professor of Chemistry.

The appointee will contribute to the teaching of undergraduate courses across the chemistry curriculum and will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of online courses. The incumbent will contribute to the school’s postgraduate/ masters, PhD programmes, supervise research students, and will be expected to undertake research in his/her area of expertise, and publish the findings in reputable scientific journals. The appointee will also be expected to successfully attract research grants (from internal & external sources) in the thematic area of research and support the University’s mission and goals as set out in the latest University’s Strategic Plan. The appointee will also assist with other tasks assigned by the Head of School.

The incumbent will also lead the design and development of the curriculum; teaching undergraduate and postgraduate, Masters/ PhD courses both on-campus and through the flexible modes of delivery; conduct and lead research in the areas of inorganic chemistry; and contribute to the University’s research mandate. The incumbent should have a demonstrated international academic excellence, and outstanding contribution to teaching, research, and scholarship. He/she is a leader in the area, has initiated research and case studies related to chemistry, and has published findings in high ranked international journals. 

The Appointee shall mainly be responsible for the following;

• Provide academic leadership and foster excellence in research, teaching and scholarly activities in the discipline;
• Assume the role of substantive Head of School/Discipline and participate in School and University services;
• Develop and administer programmes in the discipline;
• Undertake course planning, development, coordination and delivery (including online and face to face teaching);
• Academic counselling and consultation with students;
• Supervise research students to the successful completion of postgraduate programmes; and
• Conduct and publish individual and/or collaborative research.

The Person We Seek

To be considered for Professor position, applicants must have;

• A PhD in Chemistry or cognate discipline, and be a leading, international authority in this area;
• Extensive teaching experience;
• Made a sustained and excellent contribution at international level to academic research and leadership within the relevant discipline;
• Demonstrated sustained distinction in your interdisciplinary contributions;
• Championed academic standards and freedom;
• Demonstrated excellent communication skills, and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff;
• Demonstrated sustained leadership in tertiary teaching, including research-informed teaching, curriculum development and the enhancement of teaching quality, and demonstrated commitment to promoting and advancing the principles of equity, inclusion, and diversity;
• An outstanding track record in research, with outcomes of high quality and impact (including peer-reviewed publications, e.g. journal articles, book chapters, monographs), evidence of attracting external funding and/or of principal investigation in international research projects, and proven experience in successfully recruiting and supervising research students to completion.

Professor should:

• Demonstrate excellence in teaching in a multicultural environment;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• Experienced with distance and flexible learning.

The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.

Salary Range: FJ $153,416 to $165,855 per annum.

The University may offer an attractive market loading to exceptional candidates.
