The Department of Life Sciences is seeking candidates for two appointments at Assistant/Associate Professor (Lecturer / Senior Lecturer) level in the general area of microbiomics (this advertised position is for human microbiomics and there is an additional position advertised for microbiomics). 

These appointments are intended to strengthen the department’s research and teaching programmes through increased focus on the influence of microbiota across a broad range of topics including evolution, biodiversity and conservation, human health, agriculture and food security, drug discovery and pharmacology.   

About the role

This represents an outstanding opportunity for early or mid-career researchers to initiate or integrate their microbiome-based research programmes in a newly established Life Sciences department boasting research strengths and expertise in a broad range of topics.

The role is offered as a full-time permanent (tenured) appointment. There is no compulsory retirement age.  

The successful candidates will have a proven a track record of research experience including high impact publications in any aspect of microbiomics, including, but not restricted to:

  • community ecology 
  • evolution 
  • biodiversity and conservation 
  • human disease 
  • plant disease 
  • environmental microbiomes 

As well as conducting cutting-edge externally funded research, they will be expected to contribute to the development of new taught courses at undergraduate and masters level and to supervise postgraduate research students.

About the department

The Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath was established in 2022 through the merger of the former Departments of Biology & Biochemistry and Pharmacology & Pharmacy.

The department is located on the main University campus, in close proximity to the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. 

There is a strong interdisciplinary and collaborative culture across departments, fostered by a number of research centres including those for Therapeutic Innovation (CTI), Mathematical Biology (CMB) and Bioengineering and Biomedical Technologies (CBio) as well as the Milner Centre for Evolution (MCE).

The department boasts a suite of environmentally controlled culture rooms as well as greenhouses, a zebrafish aquarium, Drosophila laboratory, a GridION and PromethION 2 Solo nanopore sequencing facility and a range of dedicated microscopes including confocal, 2-photon, light-sheet and TIRF. Researchers within the department also have access to the university’s central imaging and mass spectrometry facilities as well as the GW4 Cryo-EM facility located at nearby Bristol University (https://www.bristol.ac.uk/gw4-electron-cryo-microscopy/equipment/).
