The role
The UK’s Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET) are hiring an Engagement and Impact Officer to help build the Centre’s external reputation and increase the impact of Centre research through integrated communications campaigns and activity. This will involve developing strong relationships with stakeholders and maintaining a network of external contacts.
This is a key role that demands outstanding communication skills, creativity, and the ability to translate complex scientific research into compelling content for a wide variety of audiences.

This role is part-time (0.3FTE) and fixed term for 24 months in the first instance.
Extension of the post beyond this date is dependent on external funding.
What will you be doing?
The Engagement and Impact Officer will work with the Centre Manager to design and plan a dissemination and external engagement strategy for the UK’s Centre for Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET), and will be responsible for its delivery. The post holder will regularly update the strategy and manage the promotion of activities and outcomes of the centre’s science programme in order to maximise its impact. The post holder will work with external organisations or agencies, including the European Space Agency (ESA) and educational institutions across the UK, to create dynamic marketing and communications materials and trusted relationships, as well as working on other external engagement activities across the centre’s national-scale community, which includes the British Geological Survey (BGS) and 14 UK universities, and in collaboration with international partners.

To be successful in the role you will have:
Experience of designing, managing, delivering and evaluating external communications (including digital communications) campaigns and projects.
Experience of using a range of communications platforms, tools and technologies.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to communicate with, interest and influence stakeholders at all levels.
The ability to develop creative ideas to engage a wide range of audiences.
Knowledge of research impact development and management.
You may also have experience of working in higher education or research sector, including experience of communicating research and activities in the geosciences.
