Project description:

Antimicrobial resistance is predicted to become a primary cause of death by 2050, and novel approaches to diagnostics are urgently required.  This PhD project will develop a rapid electrical technology that can determine whether a bacterial infection is resistant or not to a particular antibiotic.  The research is highly interdisciplinary and will merge disciplines of electronics, microbiology and biophysics to further our understanding of how and why the electrical properties of bacteria change after exposure to different drugs and how this can be used in diagnostics.  You will be expected to have a good degree in engineering (preferably electronics), with a knowledge of micro technologies and an interest in biophysics and the development of new diagnostic system.

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).
