Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 19th June 2024

The Opportunity:

The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint an experienced and meticulous Equipment Officer to join its skilled Technical Services team of over 40 staff.  The post holder works closely with the Technical Services team’s service and maintenance technicians and the School’s Health & Safety Officer.  They play a pivotal role in ensuring a sustainable, effective and safe approach to the running of the School’s numerous laboratories and workshops.

This is a new role in the School created to develop, implement and maintain School-wide inventory and asset management systems. The successful candidate will have responsibility for equipment-related record-keeping systems, ensuring a consistent approach and compliance with safety legislation and local policies. They will contribute to multi-year planning for the School’s equipment resources, including: scheduling of inspections, audits and coordination of service and maintenance plans; and providing data and information to inform planning for capacity/capability building, and decisions about equipment retiral/replacement/upgrade.

The Technical Services team provides support across the School’s ~60 laboratories and workshops, supporting the work of 4 engineering disciplines, 7 research institutes and a number of small research facilities including, FloWave (www.flowavett.co.uk), FASTBLADE (www.fastblade.eng.ed.ac.uk; located in Rosyth) and SMC (www.smc.eng.ed.ac.uk).  The range of equipment in the School and the associated safety hazards are therefore extremely broad. The successful candidate will demonstrate a flexible approach, positive attitude and robust health and safety awareness, including familiarity with health and safety documentation and systems.

The role is customer-facing and the School is a diverse and international community of staff and students.  The post holder will therefore have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong commitment to service delivery.

This role is full-time (35 hours per week), open-ended and available immediately. Part-time hours will be considered.

The School of Engineering is committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates from under-represented groups. Please contact Sally Morgan (SoE Technical Services Manager; tsm@eng.ed.ac.uk) if you would like to discuss the role informally.

A full list of main responsibilities and the knowledge, skills and experience required for the role can be found in the full job description below.

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • Passion for excellent organisation and planning
  • Proven experience with inventory and asset management
  • Good understanding of health & safety regulations and procedures in a workshop/laboratory environment
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
