About the Role

Applications are invited for a research technician position in the laboratory of Dr Nikola Ojkic at the School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences, Queen Mary University of London. Our group applies imaging, image analysis, and microbiological techniques to understand how antibiotics affect bacterial growth and how antibiotic treatments ultimately lead to bacterial cell death.

Your primary responsibilities will be to (1) develop bacterial cytological profiling and imaging protocols and (2) obtain high-quality images using phase contrast, confocal and super-resolution microscopy. In addition, you will train lab colleagues and students and support their experimental work with bacteria growth, basic molecular biology approaches and imaging.

About You

You should have a relevant BSc/BA degree (MSc desirable), extensive experience with molecular biology techniques (e.g. gene cloning and purification) and live cell imaging with an interest in bacterial response to antibiotics and bacterial cell biomechanics. You should be able to plan experiments independently, develop research protocols, and maintain good records. You should be well-organised and have a proactive, self-motivated attitude. Importantly, you should be keen to support other team members.

You will be part of a collaborative, international team of research staff and students and will be able to develop new skills and mentor other lab members.

About Queen Mary

At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.

Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.

Our reformer heritage informs our conviction that great ideas can and should come from anywhere. It’s an approach that has brought results across the globe, from the communities of east London to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.

We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, campus facilities and flexible working arrangements.
