Associate Professor in Anglophone Literatures

University of Southern Denmark - Department for the Study of Culture and Language

The Department for the Study of Culture and Language, Faculty of the Humanities, University of Southern Denmark, Odense, invites applications for a full-time tenured associate professorship in anglophone literatures with an emphasis on contemporary US and other anglophone traditions and the uses and social dimensions of literature.

The position is full-time and entails research, teaching in anglophone literatures in the English and American study programmes and associated study programmes, as well as supervision, administration, outreach and knowledge exchange.

The Department of Culture and Language is committed to diversity and encourages all qualified applicants to apply regardless of their personal background.

Successful applicants must have a PhD in the field of anglophone literary studies with an emphasis on the social uses of literature and an international research profile with a track record of excellent peer reviewed publications (published or accepted for publication) in relevant and high ranked international outlets, ideally including interdisciplinary publications. In addition, they must have completed a course in university didactics and have experience with applying for external funding for research.

Applicants will be preferred who have:

  • Specialized research involving both US and other anglophone national traditions into the uses and social dimensions of literature with regards to discussions about welfare, climate change, migration, demographic change, artificial intelligence, etc.
  • Spent time at one or more internationally recognized research environments.
  • Can present a realistic approximate 3-year-plan for future, original path-breaking research within the field of the uses and social dimensions of literature.
  • Documented and proven excellence in teaching in anglophone literatures across periods and national traditions (including the US), as well as participation in developing actual literature teaching both at BA and MA level and knowledge and ambitions to contribute to research in university didactics.
  • Documented efforts at achieving and new ideas and ambitions for seeking societal impact of research and teaching through knowledge exchange and outreach.

The ideal candidate is both strong as individual scholar and has a track record of participating in and adding value to as well as building new research groups and interdisciplinary environments.

The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).

If the successful applicant has not documented teaching experience corresponding to assistant professor level, the applicant will be employed on trial for the first 18 months.

  • Plan for research dissemination and societal impact
  • List of publications indicating the publications attached
  • A maximum of 6 of the most relevant publications (published as well as accepted and forthcoming work) since 2015. Please attach one pdf-file for each publication. For any publication with a co-author, a co-author statement must be submitted as part of the pdf-file

Applicants for an associate professorship at the Faculty of Humanities are requested to submit a teaching portfolio with the application as documentation for teaching experience as well as supervision qualifications. Please read more here

Application and all appendices must be in Danish, English or one of the Scandinavian languages. Please always include a copy of original diploma/certificates.  We only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files. All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected.

Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee and the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants' qualifications.   

The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.

If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
