The Principal Data Engineer role sits within the Data & Technology pillar within DDaT. The Principal Data Engineer will play a key role in shaping and implementing the changes and improvements required to transform the service provision of data services across the University.

Reporting into the Enterprise Data Architect, the Principal Data Engineer role forms part of the technical leadership team providing direction for the wider DDaT department. As an expert in their field, they will be responsible for the effective leadership for their technical areas of responsibility.

As a Principal Data Engineer within the Data Team, you will be responsible for the implementation of the Enterprise Data Hub, and growth of the AWS cloud data infrastructure that underpins it for the University of Bath. You will provide technical leadership to a team of engineers work closely with a team of architects and to design, build, and maintain scalable, secure, and reliable AWS solutions. 

You will also be responsible for effective technical Service Delivery within your area, ensuring services are managed in accordance with agreed service levels, standards & policies. Working with the DDaT Portfolio team the role will be responsible for the effective planning and delivery of the DDaT Projects Portfolio, ensuring alignment to the agreed organisational priorities and adherence to the agreed project delivery and assurance framework.

This role is offered on a full time (36.5 hours per week) permanent basis. 

There is a market supplement of up to £5,800 available at our discretion, based on skills and experience.

About you 

Significant experience in AWS data engineering (ideally certified professionals as Cloud Data Engineer, Software Development Engineer or Application Architect at associate level or above)

Demonstrable experience of skills in the following AWS tools: 

  • AWS core services, including EC2, S3, RDS, Glue Data Quality, Glue Studio, Glue DataBrew, Kinesis, SNS, CloudWatch, EventBridge, Step Functions, Macie and VPC

Experience of skills in the following tools/domains: 

  • ETL and Data Cleansing 
  • Data Lake, Warehouse & Metadata Management 
  • OLAP and Reporting 
  • Database Management Systems (e.g.: Oracle, SQL Server) 
  • Dashboards, visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI)
