About us:

The Department of Psychological Medicine focuses on the interface between psychiatry and medicine, psychiatry and occupation, psychiatry and the military, and psychiatry in different settings. The disorders of interest are those of the common mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety, perinatal psychiatry, psychological oncology, eating disorders and stress related disorders.

About the role:

This is an opportunity to join a multidisciplinary Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital Charity-funded study that aims to investigate the efficacy of a psychophysiological intervention, called Balance-ACT, for long COVID, in the context of a randomised controlled trial.

The research assistant will carry help with all aspects of trial management including recruiting patients to the trial and carrying out psychological and physical assessments.

The successful candidate will join a team of clinicians and scientists working across the spectrum of physical and mental health under the supervision of Professors Trudie Chalder and Nick Hart; and Dr Caroline Jolley. The work will be conducted in the Department of Psychological Medicine with strong links to the Centre for Human and Applied Physiological Sciences laboratories in the King’s College Hospital Department of Respiratory Medicine; and Respiratory Medicine at St Thomas’.

The postholder will work closely with clinical colleagues in the community and hospital-based long COVID services across King’s Health Partners. The post holder will receive training and supervision from a range of experts.

This is a part time post (17.5 Hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed-term contract until 31/3/2025.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  1. Degree in Psychology
  2. Excellent communication skills and experience creating communications for a variety of audiences
  3. Clinical Trial management experience including reporting, data monitoring, ethics etc
  4. Excellent research skills including literature searches, writing papers, presenting data and data analysis
  5. Data management experience of clinical trials

Desirable criteria

  1. MSc in health psychology (or a related area)
  2. Knowledge of qualitative methodologies
  3. Understanding Good Clinical Practice Guidelines and current GCP Certificate
  4. Excellent Microsoft office skills, database and statistical analyses packages.
  5. Experience of research governance and processes such as IRAS.
