Broom-McIntyre Diversity Fellowship - AR2996SB

University of St Andrews - School of Chemistry

Location: St Andrews
Salary: £37,099 to £44,263 per annum.
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 10th June 2024
Closes: 19th July 2024
Job Ref: 431913

Start: As soon as possible.
Fixed term: for 3 years.

The School of Chemistry wishes to establish a prestigious 3-year independent fellowship programme aimed to support early-career (postdoctoral) researchers from backgrounds that have been historically under-represented in chemistry research and academia in the UK (e.g., women, minority ethnic, LGBTQI+, disabled, low income backgrounds).

The Fellowship aims to provide a supportive and collegial environment for early-career researchers to develop their research and prepare themselves for future independent roles in academia and beyond. With all applications assessed on merit, we especially seek candidates from diverse under-represented backgrounds, who have completed a PhD in Chemistry, or a closely related subject, and can demonstrate the potential for independent research and a future academic career.

Although the successful candidate may contribute to teaching to a limited degree, the role will allow for the development of further high-quality publications from existing research; and new, independent research in the successful candidate’s area of interest. This approach is intended to provide foundational experience, support and mentorship to pursue follow-on applications for independent Fellowships.

The Broom-McIntyre Research Fellow will be associated with an existing research group within the School such that they benefit from existing technical support and infrastructure. They will also be paired with a mentor to provide support and advice and connected to networks within St Andrews to ensure that the Fellow has an excellent peer support group.

The School of Chemistry is committed to creating an inclusive environment that supports equality and diversity. Further information is available online.

Employees of the University have access to a wide range of staff benefits including:

  • Annual leave of 34 days, plus 5 public holidays.
  • Membership of the USS Pension Scheme with generous employer contributions.
  • Staff discount scheme for local and national goods and services.
  • Free staff parking, employee Carshare and Cycle to Work Schemes and subsidised local bus travel.
  • Subsidised sports membership, reduced tuition fees on degree programmes for staff, access to training and development opportunities including LinkedIn Learning, access to library facilities, salary sacrifice scheme.
  • A range of wellbeing initiatives including membership of Peppy, a health application that connects staff to expert practitioners and personalized support on health matters.

Informal enquiries are welcome, and should be addressed to Professor Chris Baddeley, Head of School (chemhos@st-andrews.ac.uk) or Professor Andy Smith, Director of Research (chemdor@st-andrews.ac.uk).

We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.
