Discover our Environmental Research and Innovation department: ERIN Department

As part of a Research and Technology Organization (RTO), the work of the Environmental Research and Innovation (ERIN) Department tackles some of the major environmental challenges our society is facing today, such as climate change mitigation, ecosystem resilience, sustainable energy systems, the efficient use of renewable resources, and environmental pollution prevention and control. You will join the Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology research group, which among others develops new monitoring tools for the surveillance of the microbial safety of water resources.

How will you contribute?

You will participate in currently running projects of the research group. The SUPERVIR project aims to implement a national platform for the surveillance of viral pathogens in wastewater for early warning of human viral epidemics. You will be involved in the dashboarding task to develop a user-friendly informatics tool for data sharing and communication. The KNOWOURWATER project is a collaborative project between Luxembourg and Quebec, and it aims at integrating novel/untapped datasets and knowledge sources on the microbial pollution (fecal contaminants and cyanobacteria blooms) of surface waters using machine learning and Bayesian networks to improve models of water resources vulnerability to microbial contaminants.

You will be more particularly responsible for the following tasks:

  • Aggregation of datasets collected at multiple spatial and temporal scales
  • Production of weekly reports on water quality and cyanobacteria based on data collection made by the group
  • Develop data treatment pipelines and automatic generation of graphs
  • Apply machine learning and Bayesian network modelling tools in close collaboration with project team members
  • Investigate the environmental and the spatio-temporal drivers of microbial contaminants in wastewater and surface waters.
  • Actively contribute to project valorisation, including publication writing and participation in international conferences
  • Review content of life-long learning course material on water surveillance and wastewater-based epidemiology

You will work in a highly multi-disciplinary environment with specialists in microbiology, molecular biology, water science, biostatistics and bioinformatics. You must demonstrate an ability to work on different projects in parallel, with a special attention to details and contribute to the development of an interdisciplinary team approach through strong interactions with national and international project team members. You will exclusively work at the office using field and laboratory data collected by other members of the group.
