About the role

Posts are available for enthusiastic analytical chemists able to operate independently and within a team of applied geochemists. The posts are open to but not limited to recent graduates with opportunity for ongoing learning and skills development.

The candidate will operate a selection of analytical instrumentation within an ISO 17025 accredited laboratory to support research on applied environmental chemistry projects in the UK and internationally.

The candidate may be required to develop new analytical methodologies for deployment in a laboratory or field environment. Opportunities may arise for UK and/or International fieldwork.

About you

You will have a first degree in Chemistry and a postgraduate qualification in Chemistry or a related subject would be highly desirable.

Although this role is at a junior level and so will be largely directed, we do expect candidates to be able to make informed choices to work safely in the laboratories and ensure activities are being conducted to support our ISO accreditation.

Essential

  • First Degree in Chemistry (S)
  • Experience in calibrating instrumentation for the analysis of environmental samples (S&I)
  • Experience in coordinating data from laboratory instruments (S&I)
  • Evidence of working in a laboratory environment (S)
  • Knowledge of laboratory safe systems of work (S&I)
  • Operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment for environmental sample analyses to UKAS requirements (S&I)
  • Awareness of laboratory Quality Assurance requirements (e.g., ISO17025) (S&I)
  • Good attention to detail and able to follow instructions precisely (S&I)
  • Demonstrate good team working skills and Self-motivated and capable of working independently and proactively (S&I)
  • Ability to learn processes, and apply this learning consistently (S&I)

Desirable

  • MSc in Chemistry or related subject (S&I)
  • Full driving licence (S)
  • Experience in applying environmental geochemistry data to biogeochemistry studies (S&I)
  • Experienced or willingness to carry out fieldwork either UK or overseas (S)
  • Experience in supervising and training students and/or overseas visitors (S&I)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint. (S&I)
  • Knowledge of statistical software (S)
  • Ability and desire for cross-disciplinary work and developing partnerships (S&I)
