The Business Development Unit (BDU) is committed to the delivery of innovative and profitable learning solutions, for students, businesses, and partners in the UK and globally. The BDU is a key contributor to the Open University’s (OU) strategy for extending reach to more diverse groups of learners through a range of channels, learning opportunities and partnerships that enable innovation and income diversification. The Unit plays a key role in delivering growth in existing markets and establishing the University in new markets, including apprenticeships.

The role

The Open University is recruiting a Business Development Manager, (Health and Social Care sector).

  • To build senior relationships across the Health and Social Care sector-based portfolio to enable the promotion and positioning of OU as a strategic workforce development partner.
  • To identify and develop strategic pipeline opportunities and manage these through to successful sales to achieve revenue targets.
  • To identify and develop OU higher education and skills solutions that meet the clients’ complex business and learning needs.
  • To manage strategic business projects by co-ordinating key stakeholders from across faculties, central university units and external bodies.

Skills and experience

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a business-related subject and proof of professional development or equivalent relevant experience.
  • An outstanding recent new business development track record within the Health and Social Care Sector.
  • Ability to build sustainable senior customer relationships from a new and on-going business perspective.
  • Excellent senior relationship management and business development skills.
  • Experience of working effectively across teams in a matrix environment with the ability to influence multiple stakeholders (internal and external) without direct authority.
  • Strong collaborative and team-working ethos, evidence of emotional intelligence and ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage or oversee successful projects, internally and externally.
  • Knowledge of higher education, learning and development, training and/or apprenticeships across the Health and Social Care sector is essential for this role.
