THE ROLE

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our College as the Deputy Safeguarding Lead. This crucial role involves supporting the highest standards of safeguarding practice for all students, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups such as children in care and young adult carers. Reporting to the Safeguarding Manager, you will collaborate closely with related personnel to adapt to evolving safeguarding practices and the Prevent Duty across the Wakefield and Castleford sites.

In addition to the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead remit, you will also act as Designated Teacher for children in care - advocating for their needs, liaising with social workers, and ensuring legal requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the College’s Safeguarding Strategy, including staff training and updates to policies.
  • Maintain safeguarding procedures, addressing risks like online safety, exploitation, and harassment.
  • Conduct risk assessments for high-risk students and take appropriate action.
  • Liaise with external partners such as the Wakefield Safeguarding Partnership and NHS services.
  • Attend and coordinate Child Protection, Child in Need, and related meetings.
  • Support the educational welfare of Children in Care through relevant meetings and reviews.
  • Collaborate with Student Experience and Services and other departments for a unified approach to safeguarding.
  • Engage in safeguarding communications, record keeping, and reporting.
  • Contribute to quality assurance of safeguarding practices through College board reports and local authority audits.

Your efforts will contribute to creating a safe and supportive environment for all students, working in tandem with the Safeguarding Manager and student experience/services teams to provide a comprehensive approach to safeguarding.

ABOUT YOU

Already able to display an empathetic work approach with students, staff, and families to ensure wellbeing and success, we’ll also expect:

  • Experience in diverse safeguarding-related practices, alongside proven negotiation skills with stakeholders.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate activities independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience in multitasking within complex support roles, as well as successful problem-solving and conflict resolution with youths and families.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, as well as skills in maintaining appropriate relationships and boundaries.
  • GCSE grade A*-C / 9-4 or equivalent in English and Maths.
