The Opportunity:

The Forest, Peat and Rural Land Manager is an important role in the Department for Social Responsibility and Sustainability (SRS). The role will lead the development and management of new and existing sustainable forests and peatland restoration projects for long term carbon and nature benefit, forestry research, and other relevant scientific purposes. All in order to deliver a high-quality mixed-species forest and peatland to underpin the University’s carbon reduction strategy and aim to become a net zero carbon university by 2040.

Your Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • High levels of knowledge and experience of forestry or land-based qualification or experience.
  • Thorough understanding of forestry, environment, land use and related issues, including whole-system effects and the potential impacts on / interdependency with local communities and nature networks.
  • Operational experience in the planning and delivery of forest management, planting and harvesting operations, and understanding of the necessary controls to protect people and the environment during periods of changing land use.
  • Demonstrable experience of negotiating and managing contracts relating to forest planting, thinning, extraction and associated activities, including application for and management of grants and budgets for same.
  • Practical leadership and management skills with both own staff and those of contractors, including the ability to balance risk and pragmatism when implementing solutions. 
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact with colleagues, contractors and members of the public from a wide variety of backgrounds. 
  • A full driving licence and experience driving off-road is essential.
