The University of Southampton is seeking a dedicated Research Fellow to join the “Empowering English language teachers to adopt multilingual pedagogy in Nepal” project, funded by the British Council. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a project aimed at developing multilingual pedagogies to enhance English language teaching in Nepal.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a part-time (0.4 FTE) or a full-time (1 FTE) fixed-term contract position from June 2024 to Feb 2025.

Job Description: 

The successful candidate will join a dynamic international team led by Dr. Tae-Hee Choi. The research focuses on creating an effective, locally meaningful translanguaging pedagogy model using English as a medium to empower both educators and students from minority backgrounds. This multi-stage project involves document research, qualitative studies, development of educational materials, and dissemination of findings. 

Duties: 

  • Conduct literature and policy reviews and generate texts to be used for reports and publications
  • Transcribe data from interviews and workshops.
  • Organise and prepare both interview and survey data for analysis.
  • Perform qualitative data analysis and report findings.
  • Support developing educational materials, such as teachers' guides and activity booklets.
  • Support producing targeted summaries for policymakers, supported by policy dialogue events.
  • Disseminate research findings via various platforms including social media, blogs, and podcasts.
  • Engage with project partners and stakeholders in the UK and Nepal.
  • Contribute to a parallel project concerning the relationship between education policy and social media.
  • Undertake additional duties as required at this level of responsibility.

Essential Requirements:  

  • PhD (or nearing completion) in Education, Applied Linguistics, Education Policy or a related field. 
  • Proven experience in conducting qualitative educational research of high quality
  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent command of English, both written and oral.

Desirable Requirements:  

  • Proficiency in Nepali.
  • Familiarity with the education system in Nepal.
  • Experience of teaching (English as a second language or multilingual context).
