Research Roles in the New UKRI Centre for Equalities in Uniformed Public Services

About the role:

The new Centre for Equalities in Uniformed Public Services is a £11.3 million investment in uniformed public services research by UKRI and represents a substantial increase in ARU’s research capacity. Key objectives of the new Centre include producing excellent underpinning research into cultural transformation in uniformed public services, and adopting a strongly collaborative approach with local, regional, and national uniformed public services organisations to tacking issues around equality, diversity, and inclusion. The new Centre brings together the strengths of two of ARU’s existing outstanding Research Institutes: the Veterans and Families Institute for Military Social Research (VFI) and the Policing Institute for the Eastern Region (PIER). 

We are now seeking to appoint a number of roles that will be pivotal in delivering the collaborative research projects and the strategic objectives of the new New E3 Equalities Research Centre. Applicants will have the chance to work with established research academics and support staff who have been instrumental in helping to shape policy and practice in their respective areas.

Associate Professor

We are looking for two Associate Professors who will work as part of the Centre leadership team – helping to set the strategic direction, research, and funding priorities. They will be responsible for the inception and effective delivery of innovative and collaborative research projects, through their leadership and management of research teams within the Centre and beyond. Securing external funding and assisting other colleagues to do likewise will be an important aspect of this role. The post-holder will take responsibility for the use of research resources to ensure projects are delivered on time, to budget and with a good quality outcome, this will include leadership in the use of the newly constructed social sciences research laboratory at ARU Chelmsford. 

The new Centre will have a strongly collaborative approach with local, regional, and national uniformed public services organisations to tackle issues around equality, diversity, and inclusion. So, the post-holders will have the opportunity to work closely and collaboratively with these organisations on research and evaluation challenges. Alongside supervising PhD/Professional Doctorate students there will be opportunities to contribute to postgraduate teaching and learning.

Senior Research Fellow

We are looking for three Senior Research Fellows who will undertake independent and collaborative research including the preparation of research proposals and applications. They will also lead and manage consultancy and other external client services. The new Centre will have a strongly collaborative approach with local, regional, and national uniformed public services organisations to tackle issues around equality, diversity, and inclusion. These roles will also include work to support both PIER and the VFI.

The post holders will have the opportunity to develop their academic experience and portfolio including working collaboratively with a strong and dynamic team of internationally leading experts who have come together to develop this new Centre, as well as supporting the research excellence within both VFI & PIER.

One of these SRF posts will be aligned to the Centre for Military Women’s Research, which will be an important research group within the new UKRI-funded Equalities Centre. If you have extensive research experience of working on military women’s research, please indicate this in your application for consideration for this specific role.

Research Fellow

We are looking for two Research Fellows who will undertake research including collecting and critically analysing research data using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Through research they will report on data analysis, interpret findings, write research reports, and disseminate these through conference presentations and published papers. The new Centre will have a strongly collaborative approach with local, regional, and national uniformed public services organisations to tackle issues around equality, diversity, and inclusion. These roles will also include work to support both PIER and the VFI. The post holders will also contribute to the development of research objectives in collaboration with the lead academic. 

Research Assistant

The Research Assistant will undertake basic research including conducting literature reviews and database searches whilst also providing research support to the academic research manager. The new Centre will have a strongly collaborative approach with local, regional, and national uniformed public services organisations to tackle issues around equality, diversity, and inclusion. They will also contribute to the planning of research projects, the preparation of research applications and assisting with the writing of research reports and papers as directed by the lead academic.
