Senior Laboratory Support Technician, with a particular focus on Physical and Analytical Chemistry research and instrumentation.
The School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham is a vibrant and thriving academic community with over 150 academic, research and Professional Services staff. You will play an important role in supporting the implementation of the School’s research by supporting Physical and Analytical Chemistry research section. The post holder will provide technical support to the groups including, but not limited to, mechanical, electronic and vacuum technology. This support will include the operation and maintenance of instruments, providing guidance and training to users, running samples, ensuring that the laboratory functions in a safe, efficient and effective manner, carrying out liquid nitrogen and helium fills and any other duties as may reasonably be requested by the Technical Manager. It is anticipated that the main duties will develop over time as research interests within the school progress.
As a member of the School Technical Team, your contribution will be important and valued by your colleagues and the research staff and students we support. You will be part of a collegiate school community with a supportive working environment formed by the School’s Professional Services Teams and Academic staff. You will be expected to demonstrate citizenship and develop and maintain generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships, ensuring the way you carry out your role impacts positively on how others carry out theirs.
You should hold a degree or an equivalent technical/professional qualification or relevant experience in a similar role, and GCSEs in Mathematics and English at C or above (or equivalent). You should have proven knowledge and understanding of the relevant technical and scientific methods, laboratory equipment and extensive experience of similar laboratory-based work.
