About the role

We are seeking to appoint a Research Computing Officer to join a vibrant team to provide support for researchers conducting high-performance computing as part of research projects involving structural biology, molecular dynamics simulations and bioinformatics. You will be involved in managing these multiple server systems, with a particular focus on those for cryo-electron microscopy, structural biology and protein design. You will work closely with a second research computing officer as an integral part of the IT team of the Department of Biochemistry and will also work closely with the cryogenic electron microscopy facility manager and be part of cryo-EM facility team.

The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.

About you

You will be educated to GCSE standard or equivalent and have an advanced degree and/or have significant experience of managing large-scale computing platforms.  Extensive experience of performing routine maintenance tasks on computer hardware is expected, as is having the expertise in troubleshooting complex hardware and/or middleware problems autonomously.  You will have advanced knowledge of Linux/Unix operating system administration and proficiency in linux/unixscripting languages.  Having advanced knowledge of sharing protocols such as NFS and SAMBA, networking protocols and knowledge of Infiniband is expected.  You will have a meticulous approach to technical documentation and record keeping and have good knowledge of distributed storage systems and volume management systems. Good organisations skills with the ability to prioritise your own workload and to work with minimum supervision is essential and you will have the ability to communicate well with people at all levels.
