Overview
The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics invites applications for a PhD position in Physics, under the supervision of Prof. Noel Healy
Integral to the second quantum revolution is the entangled photon. These emergent particles are essential in many technologies including quantum cryptography and quantum computing. This PhD project will develop an ultra-efficient platform to generate on-demand entangled photons for the future of quantum technologies.
We are looking for an outstanding student to do research in experimental physics to develop this next-generation technology. The student will have access to the very cutting edge of expertise, materials, nanofabrication, and device characterization. Postgraduate students at Newcastle University can also take part in a range of paid teaching activities, with training provided.
The successful candidate will join the Photon Science Laboratory at the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics at Newcastle University and will work closely with, including an opportunity to visit, our partners at the National University of Singapore.

Eligibility criteria
You must have, or expect to gain, a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a subject relevant to the proposed PhD project (inc. computing, mathematics, engineering etc.). Enthusiasm for research, the ability to think and work independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are also essential requirements.
Home and international applicants (inc. EU) are welcome to apply and if successful will receive a full studentship. Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills.
International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
