The post holder is a member of a major research team, reports for any research and development related projects to the company’s technical Director and acts as the team leader, setting clear task objectives, developing productive working relations and defining and delegating tasks to the R&D team.

The post holder is highly skilled at laser optic design, with in-depth knowledge about biological microscopy, laser scanning microscopy and image processing. The person can lead and is comfortable with sharing knowledge. 

Responsibility

  • The design and optimization of optical imaging systems. This includes optics, mechanics, interfacing, as well as software for control and data processing.
  • The simulation of optical systems using commercial software.
  • The construction, alignment, and critical evaluation of proof-of-principle optical instruments.
  • Close liaison with collaborators, including the installation and testing of instruments at customer labs.
  • Manage and monitor research resources and budgets in relevant areas.
  • Contribute to establishing the strategic direction and setting standards for the work of the wider group.
  • Work with the team to analyse and develop system requirements and develop their architectures and integration
  • Regularly contribute to the writing of draft patents, technical articles, present papers at conferences.
  • Carry out collaborative projects with colleagues in partner institutions and research groups.
  • Train other members of the team on specialist methodologies or procedures. 

Selection criteria

  • Degree in physics, engineering or closely related subjects.
  • Previous experience developing optical microscopes.
  • Experience with the design and implementation of free-space optical imaging systems.
  • Capable of modifying and optimising existing designs and imaging instruments.
  • Be organised and able to communicate highly technical and complex information in a clear and concise way, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to identify key problems, generate ideas on how to solve them and perseverance to arrive at and implement solutions.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and work with others, and ability or potential to take responsibility for and manage a project with evidence of good judgment and reliability. 

Desirable selection criteria 

  • Experience with handling and imaging biological samples.
  • Previous experience in ultrafast non-linear optical systems.
  • Experience with optical lens design.
