We are excited to announce an opening for a Demonstrator in Computing & Mathematical Sciences at Birkbeck, a renowned institution in the heart of Central London. As part of the Faculty of Science, School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, this role offers an excellent opportunity to support the teaching team on the BSc and MSc Psychology programmes.

As a Demonstrator, you will:

  • Assist in the delivery of specific modules at the undergraduate or postgraduate level.
  • Engage in scholarship to ensure good practice in teaching and apply appropriate levels of knowledge in the subject areas to be taught.
  • Assist students in completing lab and practice worksheets, carrying out use cases, and debugging or further developing their code in a variety of programming languages.
  • Undertake other duties as required, including marking coursework and/or exams and administrative tasks.

The ideal Demonstrator candidate should have:

  • A first degree in Computing/Maths or an equivalent relevant qualification.
  • Advanced experience in using a range of statistical techniques and report writing suitable for quantitative psychological science research.
  • Confident presentation skills and the ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.
  • Experience of marking coursework and/or exams.
  • Commitment to working with diversity and engaging the interest and enthusiasm of students.

Moreover:

  • Individuals undertaking this role will be employed as part of their general academic development to obtain practical teaching experience, and will undertake this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies.

We are looking for a number of Demonstrators to support various modules including; programming in python and Java, data science and analytics, machine learning, software development and engineering and information systems. Remuneration

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £23.39 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6. Marking is paid separately for these roles.

Terms and Conditions

Fixed-term contract (3 hours a week teaching) for 1/2 terms. Closing date: 2 June 2024, interview date w/c 10 June 2024.
