The burgeoning field of synthetic biology offers promising avenues for engineering artificial cells with tailored functionalities for diverse biomedical applications. This PhD project aims to explore novel strategies for designing and constructing synthetic cells capable of performing complex tasks, mimicking natural cellular behaviors, and interfacing with biological systems.
The objectives of the project include: (1) Develop innovative methodologies for constructing synthetic cells with membrane architectures, and intracellular machinery; (2) Investigate strategies for incorporating biomimetic features into synthetic cells, including cellular compartments, membrane proteins, and signaling pathways; (3) Characterize the biophysical properties and functional capabilities of synthetic cells; (4) Explore the potential applications of synthetic cells in drug delivery, biosensing, regenerative medicine, or tissue engineering; and (5) Evaluate the biocompatibility, stability, and safety profiles of synthetic cells in vitro and in vivo.
