Applications are invited from talented, and creative students for a PhD place in Experimental Particle Physics, to join the Sussex group working on the DUNE experiment under the supervision of Prof Simon Peeters and Dr Kate Shaw.

DUNE is an international mega experiment that is being developed to measure CP violation in the neutrinos. These still somewhat mysterious particles could hold the key to explaining the matter – antimatter symmetry in the Universe. Even though the big bang created matter and antimatter, we are living in a matter dominated Universe. In addition, DUNE has a unique sensitivity to neutrinos from a supernova in our Galaxy, which would give a wealth of information on neutrino particles as well as the dying moments of stars. The amount of data that will be produced by DUNE is vast and we need to be able to effectively identify rare events such as supernova neutrino interactions. The Sussex group focuses on the development of the software to do this. You will be working in an international mega experiment, so being able to communicate effectively, build networks, and take initiative is a key skill that we are looking for. In addition, Dr Shaw leads the outreach activities for the DUNE experiment, and you will have the opportunity to get directly involved with this and further develop your communication skills.

Funding is available for a September 2024 start which includes a tax-free bursary (£18,662 per annum in 2023/24) and fully paid tuition fees for 3.5 years at the home-student level (£4,712 per annum in 2023). Additional financial support is provided to cover short-term and long-term travel. Interviews of shortlisted candidates will be held in February and March initially and will continue until positions are filled. Applications from self-funded students interested in available projects are also welcome at any time of the year.

Application deadline: 24 May 2024 at 23:59 BST
