Mansfield College, Oxford invites applications for a Fixed-Term Stipendiary Lectureship (six hours) in Literature in English 1830-present day, for one year from 1 October 2024, to cover the sabbatical of Professor Michèle Mendelssohn.

Mansfield has the highest state sector intake among Oxford colleges, and regularly surpasses the targets the University has set for widening participation and increasing social mobility in undergraduate admissions. We value diversity and difference as necessary elements of a vibrant intellectual culture. Mansfield admits 8 students a year in English.

The duties of the post include: i) teaching six weighted hours a week (averaged over three eight-week terms) through a combination of tutorials and classes; ii) participation in the organisation and administration of English at the College in collaboration with the other English tutors. The successful candidate should have submitted, or be close to submitting a doctorate. They will teach two undergraduate courses: Prelims Paper 3: Literature in English 1830 - 1910 and Prelims Paper 4: Literature in English 1910 - present day.

The essential section criteria for the advertised post are: teaching experience in the relevant literary periods; excellent skills as a tutor and communicator; willingness to undertake academic-related administration and to support the academic welfare of students; willingness to participate in the English undergraduate admissions interviewing and College Open Days, engage positively with Mansfield’s objectives as a College promoting widening participation in higher education.

The salary for the post is based on the Stipendiary Lecturers’ scale currently £15,244-£16,166 pa, depending on experience. The post carries full dining rights, (free meals provided in College) and the Lecturer will have a teaching room in College.
