The British Institute at Ankara welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship relating to research that fits within one of its Strategic Research Initiatives.
The Fellowship will be tenable for 12 months from September 2024. The Fellow is entitled to apply for a prolongation of the Fellowship for a further period of 12 months (up to a maximum of 24 months in total).
The Fellow will be based at the Institute in Ankara and will be required to spend at least two-thirds of the period of their Fellowship at the Institute. The remaining one-third can be spent outside Ankara for research purposes, in consultation with the Institute’s Director.
Applicants are required to submit an application form, together with a cover letter and research plan. The research plan should present a timetable for the anticipated research and include clear deliverables. It should lead to a substantial publication either in monograph and/or article form.
Fellows will be awarded £20,000 tax-free per annum, payable in monthly instalments, and will receive 22 days of annual leave.
All costs including travel (to and from Turkey as well as any academic travel, such as to attend conferences), health insurance, visas and accommodation need to be covered by this annual amount. Accommodation will be available at the Institute in Ankara, as required, at a rate of £10 per night or £250 per month.
Eligibility
Applicants must have either been awarded a PhD by a UK Higher Education Institution within the last two years or have completed their viva examination before the Fellowship start date. We also invite applications from people who have an active link with a UK Higher Education Institution who were granted their PhD up to 10 years before the time of their application. Applicants for a BIAA Postdoctoral Fellowship may be holders of a PhD in any academic discipline within the arts, humanities and social sciences.
Applicants in any doubt about their eligibility are advised to contact the BIAA London Manager at biaa@thebritishacademy.ac.uk.
How to apply
It is essential that applicants read the Notes to Applicants and accompanying conditions of the Fellowship before completing the Application form. Both documents can be accessed on this webpage: https://biaa.ac.uk/grants/biaa-post-doctoral-fellowships-2/. Applicants in any doubt about their eligibility or any other aspect of their application are advised to contact the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA), where staff will be pleased to assist.
Applicants must send the application form to biaa@thebritishacademy.ac.uk (via the ‘Apply’ button above) by 30 April 2024.
Applications should be supported by two references, which need to be provided on the headed paper of the referee’s home institution or within an email which indicates the position and institution of the referee. Note that applicants are responsible for ensuring that their referees submit their references directly to biaa@thebritishacademy.ac.uk by the closing date of 30 April 2024.
