The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity exists for a Professor and Head of Banking and Finance to join the Department of Banking and Finance within the Faculty of Business and Economics, Monash University. The department is a leader in the advancement of knowledge in banking and finance education and research with a commitment to excellence through their world-class research outputs and contemporary and engaging teaching practices. The Department delivers quality and impactful research that influences industry. We have a vibrant research culture, and engage with industry to drive and deliver relevant research projects.
The Professorial appointment will be a continuing appointment and will include the role of Head of Department for an initial period of three (3) years with opportunity for renewal. This position will report to the Senior Deputy Dean, Faculty Operations and will provide direct supervision to approximately 70 staff within the Department.
As a member of the faculty executive group, the successful incumbent will contribute to the development of the Business School’s strategic plan, will play a leading role in implementing the strategic plan in the Department of Banking and Finance and inspire staff with a strong vision for education, engagement and research.
A key focus will be on cultivating a collaborative and high-performing academic team. The role demands active participation in curriculum development, academic governance, and quality assurance processes, ensuring the delivery of outstanding education and research training across the Faculty. In addition to departmental leadership, the Professor will maintain a strong research profile in alignment with the Faculty’s strategic priorities. This includes securing competitive research funding, leading major projects, and mentoring early career researchers and postgraduate students.
The role involves expanding the Faculty’s Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program by attracting top-tier candidates and building robust internal and external partnerships. The appointed candidate will contribute meaningfully to the academic community, maintain and broaden collaborative partnerships with external agencies both nationally and internationally and ensure the Department’s compliance with University policies and legal and statutory obligations.
The appointee will have a doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing and will be recognised as a leading authority in the relevant discipline. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in academic leadership and departmental management, demonstrating strategic planning capabilities. They will possess an internationally recognised research profile in Banking and Finance, evidenced by high-impact publications and sustained scholarly engagement. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills are essential, including the ability to mentor staff, collaborate effectively with academic peers, and represent the department across faculty and University committees.
