BACKGROUND

The Defence & National Security (D&NS) theme at the Turing is looking to expand its Applied Research Group (ARG). 

ARG applies cutting edge research to real-world problems.ARG collaborate closely with partners’ technical and subject-matter experts. 

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant discipline and/or proven equivalent professional experience – for example, across government, defence or industry. The role will suit individuals who thrive in autonomous working environments with an enthusiasm for technical innovation. 

DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Develop, implement and adapt state-of-the-art and novel data science and machine learning techniques to problems faced by ARG’s partners.
  • Work at pace, in a highly collaborative environment, using industry standard tooling for testing, version control and collaboration to create software artifacts that can be shared with Turing’s partners.
  • Perform experiments and develop capabilities, which might include building and deploying machine learning models; applying data science, statistical and algorithmic techniques to data; building microservices, data processing/engineering systems and platforms or developing user interfaces and/or visualisations.
  • Technical ownership and management of applied research projects, including frequent liaison with partners. This will include travel to partner sites as and when needed. 

Person Specification

  • PhD or an equivalent qualification/experience in computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, electrical and electronic engineering, or a related discipline. 
  • Experience in cybersecurity or machine learning knowledge.
  • Experience of participating in or leading applied research projects.
  • Experience in some of the following languages: Python, C, C++, C#, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, Java, Kotlin, Rust, Go.
  • Demonstrable experience managing conflict and resolving stakeholder tensions.
  • Experience developing software in a scientific computing context, ideally in Python, familiarity with Pandas, NumPy and PyTorch/TensorFlow, and working with HPCs.
  • Current DV or eligibility to obtain and maintain DV screening  process once in-post.

Terms and Conditions

This post is offered on a full time, fixed-term basis until April 2026 to start with. The annual salary is £45,505 plus excellent benefits, including flexible working and family friendly policies, Employee-only benefits guide | The Alan Turing Institute

The Alan Turing Institute is based at the British Library, in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter. We expect staff to come to our office at least 4 days per month. Some roles may require more days in the office; the hiring manager will be able to confirm this during the interview.
