Founded in 1845, University of Galway is one of Ireland’s oldest and largest universities, with a vibrant community of over 21,000 students and staff, and 110,000 alumni in over 100 countries across the world. University of Galway is counted among the Top 275 universities in the world according to the most prestigious rankings (QS), positioned in the top 2% globally. It is a research-led institution with global ambition and deep roots in the region and nationally.
This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional academic to join the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics as Established Professor in Accountancy. This school is one of three Schools within the College of Business, Public Policy and Law at University of Galway, and is AACSB, AMBA and EFMD programme accredited, is a member of PRME and holds an Athena Swan Silver award for equality.
The Accountancy & Finance Discipline is nationally and internationally recognised for excellence in teaching and research. It offers three accredited masters programmes: Master of Accounting; MSc in International Accounting and Analytics; and MSc in Corporate Finance which is affiliated with the CFA Institute. At undergraduate level, it delivers a dedicated BComm (Accounting) and offers specialist streams in Accounting and Finance within the Bachelor of Commerce programme. The Discipline also contributes to the School’s flagship MBA programme, delivering modules in corporate governance, performance management, and accounting.
A key component of teaching across programmes is the integration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspectives, aiming to develop skilled, engaged, and civically minded graduates who make positive contributions to society, business, and policy.
Candidates should hold a PhD in accounting or an accounting-related field and have a publication record and research supervision experience commensurate with the grade of appointment - preferably in areas of strength of the Accountancy & Finance group. Candidates should have significant teaching experience in accounting modules at undergraduate and post graduate levels (e.g. auditing, financial accounting, management accounting). Preference will be given to applicants with an ability to teach across more than one accounting area. The successful candidate will have proven leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to mentor staff and contribute to the strategic direction of the discipline. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will lead the Discipline of Accountancy and Finance, contribute to the leadership and development of the School; engage in scholarship and research; carry out relevant teaching and assessment at all levels; and contribute to the intellectual life of the University and the wider community.
