Job Summary

We are seeking to appoint a criminologist as Assistant Professor to expand our vibrant Department of Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology.

This post represents an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual to join our vibrant Department of Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology. The Department is located within the University of Birmingham’s School of Social Policy and Society, which is one of the four Schools in the College of Social Sciences.

Applications are invited for the post of Assistant Professor in Criminology, which is available from 1st September 2025. The post-holder will be expected to make a strong contribution to criminological and inter-disciplinary research across the Department.

Potential candidates will have a doctorate, be research active, and have excellent administrative and teaching skills. 

Main Responsibilities

  • To contribute to a range of education-related activities, including the management, development and delivery of teaching and assessment at all levels, and enhancing student experience and employability.
  • To advance teaching methods teaching and learning practice in your modules within the school, lead on curriculum development, and play an important role in student academic and pastoral support.
  • To deliver teaching that inspires students and is informed by discipline-based research.
  • To deliver high quality research through research grant capture, publishing internationally-excellent research, supervising research students and engaging in impact activity 

Person Specification

  • Normally, a higher Degree relevant to the discipline area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • The ability to ability to produce high quality outputs resulting in impact on discipline and recognition
  • The ability to teach across a range of modules in the Department
  • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues.
  • Ability to contribute to School/Departmental management processes.
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
  • Skills in managing, motivating & mentoring others.
