Ariadne Nicolaeff PhD Scholarship in Russian Literary Translation

The School of Literature, Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia invites applications for the Ariadne Nicolaeff PhD Scholarship in Russian Literary Translation. The Scholarship will be awarded for an outstanding PhD project which involves a substantial piece of literary translation from Russian, with accompanying critical essay. The proportion between the parts will normally be 60% for the translation and 40% for the critical essay. The Scholarship is awarded in memory of distinguished drama translator Ariadne Nicolaeff, and projects involving drama translation are particularly welcome. The award-holder is expected to begin the PhD on 1 October 2025, 1 February 2026 or 1 June 2026.

To qualify, you must be accepted into UEA’s PhD programme in Creative and Critical Writing. The Scholarship is available to both Home and International Fees students. You may not hold another donor-funded scholarship simultaneously.

The Scholarship will contribute a total of £26,000 towards PhD tuition fees and living expenses, paid as £9,000 for year 1 and £8,500 for years 2 and 3 (or pro rata equivalents for part-time study).
