Lecturer (Education) in Psychology and Criminology

About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Lecturer (Education) to join us to contribute to the brand-new BSc Psychology and Criminology programme at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London and to deliver specialist research-led teaching commensurate with their field of expertise. The postholder will contribute to the successful delivery of first year modules in core areas of psychology, crime, criminal justice, and criminology, and academic study skills, and act as personal tutor to support students on the programme. As the course develops, the postholder will, in time, have responsibility for developing and delivering one or more second year core modules and/or final year optional modules commensurate, where possible, with their area of expertise. We therefore welcome applications that demonstrate expertise across contemporary psychological and criminological areas of interest, including research methods in psychology and criminology.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague who can make a distinctive contribution to education. We are particularly interested in recruiting someone with a background in teaching Psychology and Criminology, and/or who has a current programme of Psychology and Criminology-related research, pedagogical research, and/or research which impacts on the student experience and creates evidence-based teaching. You should have excellent teaching and communication skills and be able to inspire and inform students.

You should also have experience of learning, teaching, and assessment in psychology and criminology-related subjects at undergraduate level. Experience of teaching research methods in these areas would be desirable.

The appointment will be made at Lecturer level on the Academic Education Pathway, where the primary contribution is to education and secondary contribution to scholarship. This would be the equivalent of four days a week spent on education. The AEP contract is focused on the delivery of education, education and subject-specific scholarship, and leadership in education. The following expectations are associated with the AEP: teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation, education-related and subject-specific research, and administration.

This is a full-time position and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you: 

Essential criteria

1. PhD in area relevant to the BSc Psychology and Criminology programme 
2. Experience of module leadership or similar role in relation to the fields of psychology and criminology  
3. Experience of designing and delivering excellent teaching and assessment for undergraduate students, in person and/or online, in relation to the fields of psychology and criminology, including excellent IT skills and experience with virtual learning environments (e.g. Moodle)  
4. Highly effective oral and written communication skills, to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information, alongside good organisational and administrative skills 
5. Ability to conduct high quality research evidenced, for example, by high-quality publications and presentation of research in national and/or international fora  
6. Evidence of high self-motivation and ability to organize, plan and prioritize workload   

• Experience of providing pastoral support and guidance to undergraduate students 
• Demonstrable understanding of, and commitment to, working within the principles of culture, equality, diversity, and inclusion 

Desirable criteria

• Higher Education accreditation/qualification (e.g. Advance HE Fellowship or PGCAPHE)   
• Understanding of the UK Higher Education environment 
• Ability to supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects 
• Skills in research design relevant for field
• Experience of successfully teaching research methods in psychology and/or criminology and successfully teaching academic/study skills for undergraduate students.
