The School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering (CSEE) is a large and vibrant department in the Faculty of Science and Health.  CSEE is internationally known for its research in a range of areas and offers an excellent education to its students

Essex has a long-standing tradition of research in Artificial Intelligence and Communications. It was one of the first UK universities to house a central research activity in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and pioneered a systems approach to telecommunications. Since 2014, CSEE has pursued an ambitious programme of development and expansion beyond its historic origins in Artificial Intelligence and Communications. As part of this expansion, long-standing research activities carried out within the AI group in the areas of Robotics, Embedded Systems as well as Brain Computer Interfaces and Neural Engineering gained critical mass. As a result, CSEE now has four Research Groups:

  1. AI — Artificial Intelligence
  2. BCI-NE — Brain Computer Interfaces & Neural Engineering
  3. COMNET — Communications & Networking
  4. RES — Robotics & Embedded Systems

The successful candidate will work as a member of the Artificial Intelligence Research Group in the School and will be expected to deliver excellent research and teaching, to generate research income and to contribute to the administration and management of the School and to its local, regional and international profile.

The post will include teaching on our courses at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.  This may include delivering existing modules, developing new modules and generally enhancing our research-led teaching.  We aim for excellence in education as well as research and are looking for candidates who can contribute to both with research and teaching expertise in

  • Generative Artificial Intelligence
  • Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs)
  • Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
  • Computer Games and Artificial Intelligence
  • Computational Intelligence for Biology and Medicine

Qualifications and Skills required

You will hold a relevant doctoral level research degree or equivalent professional experience or practice or be close to completion of PhD and Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, or the ability to gain professional recognition at this or a higher level if appropriate.

You will also have proven experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, or demonstrable potential to achieve this, as well as experience of designing and planning of learning activities and of developing effective learning environments (face-to-face and/or virtual learning). You will possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
