The UCL Department of Geography invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Environmental Governance. Up to two open-ended, full time appointments will be made, to start in September 2025.

The Department of Geography is widely recognised as one of the leading geography departments in the world (4th worldwide in the QS Ranking 2025, 2th in the Shanghai world rankings 2024). It has been highly rated in all seven UK Research Assessment Exercises, and the 2021 REF confirmed that 96% of the Department’s research activity is considered World Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*).

UCL Geography spans a broad range of Human and Physical Geography and we are committed to cross-disciplinary teaching and research. Research within the Department is currently organised into seven clusters: Environment, Politics, and Society; Environmental Change and Biodiversity; Past Climates; Environmental Modelling and Observation; Culture and Migration; Global Urbanisms; Geospatial Analysis and Computing. We are adding a new research cluster in Geographies of Health in 2025-26.

We welcome applicants whose work complements the department’s existing interests in environmental governance and intersects with our strengths in physical geography in environmental change. We are particularly interested in scholars who foster interdisciplinary and innovative methodological approaches to research, public policy, and impact.

The successful candidate(s) will contribute to our undergraduate curriculum, as well as to our postgraduate programmes particularly our MSc Environment, Politics, and Society; but also potentially MSc Conservation, MSc Aquatic Conservation, Ecology and Restoration, or MSc Climate Change (depending on expertise).

The post is being advertised on the heels of recent appointments in the area of Environmental Change. We encourage applicants for this position who have an interest in interdisciplinary teaching and research collaboration with researchers in physical geography.
