The Department of Geography (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/geography/) is widely recognised as one of the leading geography departments in the world (4th worldwide in the QS Ranking 2025, 2th in the Shanghai world rankings 2024). It has been highly rated in all seven UK Research Assessment Exercises, and the 2021 REF confirmed that 96% of the Department’s research activity is considered World Leading (4*) or Internationally Excellent (3*).
UCL Geography spans a broad range of Human and Physical Geography and we are committed to cross-disciplinary teaching and research. Research within the Department is currently organised into seven clusters: Environment, Politics, and Society; Environmental Change and Biodiversity; Past Climates; Environmental Modelling and Observation; Culture and Migration; Global Urbanisms; Geospatial Analysis and Computing. We are adding a new research cluster in Geographies of Health in 2025-26.
The Department is committed to the idea of Geography as a global discipline and welcomes applicants with regional expertise from across the world. We are dedicated to increasing understanding of the world as precursor to making the planet a better, fairer place, and we are searching for a colleague who shares that goal. Our staff and students often engage with local community groups, campaigning organizations, government, international organisations, businesses and schools in order to connect global knowledge to specific local issues. We are very proud that research and teaching undertaken by members of the Department of Geography at UCL has had an impact in changing the world for the good in both big and small ways. We are searching for a new colleague who shares our commitments to collegiality, inclusivity and openness.
The UCL Department of Geography is seeking to appoint a part time, one-year fixed term Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Geospatial Data Analysis and Cartography at 0.5FTE from September 2025. This is a 0.5FTE, one-year fixed term role to cover a member of staff. The salary range for this position is Grade 7, SP 33-37: £46,796 - £51,860 pro rata, per annum (including London Allowance).
The position will support Cartography and Environmental GIS teaching across the Faculty. The Department encourages applications from those trained in quantitative geography (in p articular spatial statistics) with confidence in the use of GIS and data visualisation, and in the application of geospatial analyses across a range of data sets covering both, social and environmental sciences, and who additionally can undertake tutorial support across our first year curriculum.
Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline by the time they begin their appointment. Applicants must demonstrate expertise in the areas to be taught, with an aptitude for teaching and developing Geography modules at both undergraduate and graduate levels and be committed to fostering a positive learning environment for students. Excellent presentation and teaching communication skills, along with the ability to work collaboratively and to deadlines, and a demonstrated commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion is essential.
