ECHO (Epidemiology of Cancer Healthcare and Outcomes) Research group.

Our research is aimed at improving the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and outcomes of cancer patient populations, and the understanding of the role of tumour, patient and health system factors in inequalities in cancer care and outcomes. The ECHO Group includes researchers with diverse backgrounds and the post holder will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with epidemiologists, statisticians, clinicians, and public health specialists. Our research projects are supported by competitively acquired funding by NIHR, Cancer Research UK, HDRUK and NCI, inter alia.

About the role

We are looking for a statistician with an interest in observational epidemiological research, including both large-scale descriptive epidemiology and causal inference. The role requires methodological expertise and an interest in applied quantitative research, including in developing the data science skills required for working with large-scale routine healthcare datasets. The post-holder will work with Dr Matt Barclay (senior research fellow, statistician) and with other senior and junior members within the ECHO Group, as well as with collaborators in UCL and other UK and international collaborators.

Application Details:

  • This is an open-ended contract with fixed-term funding until 31st of December 2026 in the first instance.
  • Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 28 (salary £41,255 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.

About you

Experience of prior healthcare epidemiology / data analysis work in academic research departments or service environments (e.g. NHS Digital/NHS England, CPRD, UKHSA), or relevant sectors of the health industry is desirable, particularly regarding the use of person-level electronic health records and administrative population-based data. Applicants must have relevant training or experience and be competent in using command-line interface statistical software.
