Mary Immaculate College (MIC) is an autonomous, university-level, Catholic College of Education and the Liberal Arts. Founded in 1898, and linked academically with the University of Limerick, MIC is the oldest higher education institution in Limerick. Significant expansion in recent decades has seen the College’s offerings proliferate across two impressive campuses, one based in the heart of Limerick City and one in Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Assistant Professor in English Literature MIC Limerick Campus
Mary Immaculate College wishes to appoint an Assistant Professor in English Literature on a Full Time, Permanent basis.
The Department of English Language and Literature seeks an innovative and involved faculty member to teach on English programmes within the Faculty of Arts. Under the direction of the Head of Department of English Language and Literature and the Dean of Arts, the successful candidate will complement an enthusiastic team, contribute to the teaching and supervision of English Language and Literature for undergraduates and postgraduate students across faculties, and contribute to the academic life of the college. The appointee will be required to participate in the teaching and delivery of assigned modules in the College’s undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, e.g. the BA in Liberal Arts, the B.Ed. in Primary Education, the Online Taught MA in Modern English Literature and the Structured PhD in Irish Studies. The appointee will also be expected to supervise the thesis component of the Taught MA in Modern English Literature, and of the MA in Philosophy and Literature.
Furthermore, the candidate will also be expected to supervise dissertations at research MA and PhD levels. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to the research activities of the Department of Language and Literature. In addition, the individual appointed will be required to participate in programme development, and will be assigned administrative duties. The Department is research active with more than 700 undergraduates and some 45 postgraduates. In terms of postgraduate work, the Department has graduated 63 PhDs, 175 taught MAs and 10 research MAs. Current faculty have published 63 academic monographs and edited collections and some 230 journal articles and book chapters. Commitment to high-quality research-led teaching and learning in a student-centred environment is important. Enthusiasm for a multi-disciplinary environment is desired. The person appointed must exhibit evidence of strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and continued scholarly activity.
