The University of Hong Kong – HKU-Shenzhen Hospital

The University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been collaborating with Shenzhen Government to develop the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital as a teaching hospital of HKU. With the presence of HKU, a new operation model for the Hospital has been introduced, aiming at providing high-quality services from primary to tertiary levels to patients in the region, whilst sustaining a teaching and training mission well supported by a robust research component. The Hospital has commenced operation since October 2012. As the Hospital is located in Shenzhen, the appointee will be based in Shenzhen. Accommodation/rental apartment in Shenzhen and weekly shuttle service between Hong Kong and Shenzhen will be provided. 

Deputy Hospital Chief Executive

We are looking for a Deputy Hospital Chief Executive to be seconded to The University of Hong Kong (Shenzhen) Teaching Hospital Limited (THL) and assigned to work in the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital. 

The Role

Reporting to the Hospital Chief Executive (HCE), the Deputy Hospital Chief Executive (at the rank of Consultant) will work in collaboration with members of the senior management team, Chiefs of Service (COS) and heads of various departments to ensure effective and efficient planning and delivery of high-quality patient-centred service, operational management, clinical teaching and research in accordance with the vision, mission and strategic direction of the Hospital.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assist and support HCE in formulating strategic directions, policies, operational objectives and goals, and annual work plans;
  • Ensure effective organization and operational management of clinical services/programs;
  • Collaborate with relevant government authorities regarding operational management and professional services at the Hospital;
  • Play a direct role in planning, developing and delivering clinical and professional services, as well as academic and research activities at the Hospital;
  • Supervise daily operations and professional services at the Hospital, working closely with staff, stakeholders and the community to optimize performance;
  • Lead efforts to enhance clinical service quality and patient safety, including but not limited to clinical audit reviews, adoption of new drugs and technologies, credentialing, evidence-based practice, and accreditation readiness;
  • Coordinate with Chiefs of Service of clinical specialties, Directors of Special Clinical Centres/Services/Units, and Heads of Nursing and Allied Health Services to guide service planning and provision;
  • Manage and oversee allocated resources within assigned responsibilities, ensuring accountability; and
  • Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by HCE. 

Qualifications and Qualities

 The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications and experiences:-

  • A medical qualification eligible for registration in Hong Kong under the Medical Registration Ordinance, along with any relevant specialist qualifications and advanced academic degrees (e.g. MD, MS, PhD);
  • Over fifteen years of significant experience in healthcare and/or academia, with at least the past five years in leadership roles;
  • A distinguished career marked by consistent high performance, notable contributions, and achievements in delivering high-quality clinical services, academic research, or both;
  • Thorough understanding of healthcare policies in China, as well as the operations of public hospitals and major acute care facilities;
  • Strong leadership skills and a proven track record of leading diverse teams and staff effectively;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English, Mandarin (Putonghua) and Cantonese; and
  • Possession of advanced medical/healthcare administration qualification as a definite advantage. 

What We Offer

The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term full-time contract for 3 years, to commence as soon as possible, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, together with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme at 15% of basic salary. Other benefits include annual leave and professional leave, medical benefits, and free access to on-campus gyms and libraries.
