The PhD studentship aims at studying and developing more comprehensive user interfaces for computer-aided decision-making processes, which can benefit from 3D/360 visualization, wearable and immersive displays, virtual and augmented reality technologies, eye-tracking and HCI design solutions. The project looks at new methods to increase tele-presence and situational awareness in tele-exploration and tele-intervention.

Project outline

The PhD studentship aims at studying and developing more comprehensive user interfaces for computer-aided decision-making processes, which can benefit from 3D/360 visualization, wearable and immersive displays, virtual and augmented reality technologies, eye-tracking and HCI design solutions. The project looks at new methods to increase tele-presence and situational awareness in tele-exploration and tele-intervention for:

  • Immersive observations of operational scenarios and network-centred operation (NCO) information, including positions, threats and airborne warning and control systems (AWACS).
  • Streamlined and effective decision making in complex scenarios.
  • Natural interaction and communication between command and control (C2) theatre and operational units, and among individuals in C2 theatres.

Entry requirements

Essential

  • Educated with an undergraduate honours’ degree (or equivalent qualification) in Computer Science/Engineering or in a relevant subject area.
  • Significant experience in graphic software development and highly proficient in computer programming languages for XR development.
  • Proven ability to translate and implement specialised innovative ideas into functional code.
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to organise own research activities to high quality standards and deadlines.
  • Strong self-motivation with ability to handle complex problems requiring advanced knowledge.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage time independently to meet deadlines.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information

Desirable

  • A relevant master’s degree will be an advantage.
  • Publications in high-impact international journals and conferences.
  • Experience with state-of-the-art AI/ML software libraries.

Eligibility

Applicants must be permanently resident in the UK and have UK Home fee status.
