Institute and Departmental Introduction

The Institute of the Arts Barcelona (IAB) offers nine programmes of study and learning pathways, forming a comprehensive educational portfolio. Comprising three departments, along with key finance, operations, and engagement teams, the Institute strives for excellence in creativity, learning, teaching, and research. It is dedicated to delivering programmes that are unique, relevant, aligned with industry demand, and characterised by dynamic teaching environments and contemporary learning strategies.

The IAB aims to provide a stimulating, industry-integrated environment that fosters communication, collaboration, and innovation among a diverse community of learners within various creative and cultural contexts. Our academic faculty work closely with support staff in immersive, flexible, and work-based settings. The IAB is home to over 100 staff and 450 learners specialising in Acting, Dance, Commercial Dance, and Musical Theatre. 

The Acting Department has been an integral part of the IAB for over a decade and is one of the EU’s leading providers of tertiary, degree-based education in acting. Dedicated to excellence in actor training, the department aims to develop fully integrated performers capable of thriving in the global performing arts industry. Its focus and reach are global, requiring strong advocacy at this level. 

The department’s offerings currently include a Foundation Course (Acting. New for 2025), BA(Hons) Acting, and Master in Creative Performance Practice (Acting). With nearly 120 full-time students, along with 20+ Semester Abroad students from PACE University NY - Sands College of Performing Arts, the Acting Department represents a substantial part of the IAB's provision. Led by an internationally recognised faculty, the department’s strong and effective links with the community and industry ensure vocational and professional programmes that equip graduates with practical and creative skills

Purpose of the Role

The Institute of the Arts Barcelona (IAB) seeks a dedicated and experienced Acting Lecturer to make a significant contribution to all its Acting programmes. This role requires a dynamic individual with expertise and experience in actor training for stage and screen with additional leadership skills. The Acting Lecturer will join an established and dynamic team and will contribute to the delivery and development of all programmes, with particular focus on developing the acting element of the new Foundation Acting programme. 

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proven experience in higher education teaching, with a specific focus on actor training.
  • Recognised professional standing in the acting industry.
  • Leadership and organisational skills, with the ability and experience to lead year groups, projects, and modules.
  • A commitment to innovation in teaching and the ability to integrate current industry practices into the curriculum.
  • Excellent communication skills and experience in mentoring students and providing pastoral care.

Selection Criteria

Education/Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification or equivalent professional recognition/attainment in the relevant sector.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in teaching acting and directing in house productionswithinahighereducationsectorrelevanttotheprogrammearea.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of teaching Stanislavski-inspired acting technique at Conservatoire Level to first year students.
  • Additional knowledge of pedagogy and experience leading projects in additional specific areas, such as: Heightened Text; Contemporary Drama; Devising Theatre; etc.
  • Versatile and creative educator, with experience of teaching and/or examining at a range of levels and/or in a range of environments within the Higher Education sector with a particular focus on levels, 3,4,5, and 6.
  • Experience creating and leading modules, along with managing assessments so that they meet the required Learning Outcomes.
  • Established and current academic and/or professional profile in field relevant to the programme

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Knowledge of standard processes and expectations of the higher education sector, including matters relating to learning and teaching, assessment, quality assurance and the facilitation of student-centred learning.

Skills and Attributes

  • Ability to plan and deliver coherent and appropriate modules of learning at a range of levels (undergraduate and postgraduate), including relevant formative and summative assessment activities
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral), including ability to operate as part of a team through consultation, co-operation and evidencing mutual professional respect.
  • Ability to utilise a range of IT systems/resources confidently and to good effect in relation to communication and in support of pedagogy
  • Ability to deal directly with issues/problems and to seek the involvement/support of others where appropriate
  • Skilled in use of ICT and virtual learning platforms including operating electronically based systems for both: administrative and creative/learning purposes

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective professional relationships at all levels and to inspire and motivate students
  • Self-motivated, systematic and flexible worker, able to use time efficiently, meet priorities and deadlines and act on their own initiative when necessary
  • Evident record of relevant professional development and commitment to a continuing professional development profile

Desirable Criteria

  • Active research profile in a relevant/related area/discipline (practice, pedagogy, etc.)
  • Ability to evidence a research-informed approach to teaching

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Module Leadership - The successful and efficient development and delivery of specialist modules across full-time Foundation / BA (Hons) / MA programmes.
  • To support the Programme Leaders to deliver, assess, and continuously improve the programmes to meet artistic, academic, and professional standards.
  • As Year Group tutor, to lead weekly meetings with the year group, to update them on changes to the programme, assessments and help contextualise the programme as it is delivered. Also, to be their main point of contact for Pastoral care.
  • To contribute to quality assurance processes, including student and staff feedback, annual programme evaluations, and external examiner liaison.
  • To contribute to meetings with the department and institutionally, where required. 

Teaching and Learning

  • Deliver innovative, studio-based practical training, reflecting the diverse demands on the professional actor.
  • Contribute to teaching across modules and provide individual guidance and mentorship to students.
  • Ensure teaching practices support a range of career pathways and maintain high standards of academic and professional training.

Student Recruitment and Support

  • To partake in Audition activities and represent the Acting programmes at Open Days, Audition events, Masterclasses for recruitment purposes, where required.
  • Support students in their academic and professional development, providing guidance on careers, assessments, and personal growth.

Staff Support

  • Actively contribute to a positive, collaborative, and professional working environment.
  • Support colleagues in the delivery of the Acting programmes, aligning with and supporting the agreed pedagogical approach and department ethos.
  • Work closely with Programme Leaders, ensuring consistency in training and maintaining a unified learning experience for students.
  • Be open to collaboration on cross-disciplinary projects and department-wide initiatives.
  • Offer practical support to colleagues in rehearsals, assessments, and productions as needed.
  • Be flexible and willing to work additional hours where projects, productions, or student needs require. 

Quality Assurance and Evaluation

  • As module leader, monitor and maintain the quality of teaching materials, assessments, and Classlife resources, within modules.
  • Contribute to all QA and evaluation activities, in particular end of year Module evaluations.

Professional and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Engage in research and professional development to maintain expertise and ensure the programme’s relevance and quality.
  • Build and maintain professional networks to enhance student opportunities and programme reputation.
  • Participate in departmental and institutional committees, where required.
  • Manage administrative tasks efficiently.

Special Requirements

Some working hours may be required outside of normal business hours, particularly during performance seasons and for auditions for student selection. This may also include travelling internationally to run auditions over weekends during team time, to be agreed with Line Manager (time in lieu is accumulated for such events) 

Terms of Employment: Additional Information  

Classification

Permanent, Full time – subject to satisfactory completion of probationary period.

1400 working hours per academic year (September to August)

600 Hours Teaching over 30 weeks of the year – deductions to this made with key responsibilities (10 hours per Module Leadership, for example)

Annual Leave

38 days per year (incl. fixed given days for Christmas and Carnival) plus 12 Public Holidays – no leave to be taken during term time.

Pension Contribution

Contributions to state pension taken from salary 

Sick Leave

If signed off sick by doctor, state pays 70% of salary. This is reviewed monthly.

Medical Cover

Residency for work provides access to free Spanish State Health Care

Accommodation

IAB offers €1000 interest free loan for deposit 

Relocation

Flights to Spain and extra luggage/transport (fee to be agreed)
